The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) says that over 14 lakh students are appearing in the exam. The result of the first leg will come out on May 2. Of the total aspirants, the top 1.5 lakh students of the first leg will be eligible to appear in in JEE-Advanced to be held on May 25 in two shifts for both offline and online modes.

The overall success will not depend on the clearing JEE Advanced but aspirants have to secure good marks in their senior secondary examination so that they can avail the 40% weightage in JEE (Mains). Students can download admission cards for the first leg from JEE website. The successful top 1.5 lakh students have to register for JEE Advanced on the JEE website from May 4 to May 9.

More than 12 lakh students across the country are set to take the JEE (mains) this month. A good chunk of this number will take the offline test on April 6. The computer-based version of paper 1 will be conducted on April 9, 11, 12 and 19, and paper 2 (also online) for BArch and BPlanning aspirants will be on April 6, 2014.

Experts following trends in industry that after students who took the test last year experienced glitches during the computer-based test, many have chosen to take the paper-pen based test this time. However, students taking the test in Chennai, Cuddalore, Dindigul, Kanyakumari, Karur, Namakkal, Salem, Thanjavur, Tiruvannamalai, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, Trichy, Vellore, Villupuram and Virudhunagar can take the test only through online mode. Centres in Coimbatore and Madurai have both options. In AP Hyderabad, Warangal, Khammam, Guntur, Tiurpati Centers for Offline Exams.

Students from Chennai and other cities who want to take the test in offline mode will have to travel to Puducherry, Coimbatore or Madurai, and the centres will be allotted on a first-come-first-served basis. Scores of the test will determine admission to centrally-funded technical institutions, including NITs and IIITs. The scores will also shortlist the top 1.5 lakh candidates who can take the JEE (Advanced) for admission to the 16 IITs across the country.

The process for admissions to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technologies (IIT) in the country begins. The first leg of the two-stage examination process known as JEE-Main, conducted through both offline and online modes, is scheduled on April 6 and April 9, 11, 12 and 19 respectively.

The country has 15 IITs with a total of 9,885 seats. Besides IITs, the result will ensure admission to 30 National Institute of Technology, nine IIITs, 14 Centrally funded institutes, 32 self-financing institutes which have a total of over 27,000 seats. The JEE scores are also honored by various engineering colleges in 15 states.

The new exam pattern for the JEE was introduced last year. Since then, aspirants are taking Class XII examinations seriously. Prior to the new system, Class XII marks have no say in the JEE exam. The competition has also become far tougher with Class XII scores having a 40% say in the JEE result.

Students who have passed Class XII in 2013 have to carry Class XII mark sheet during the JEE exam. Those who are appearing in Class XII in 2014 have to carry their Class XII admit cards. For student re-appearing in Class XII to improve their scores can retain their best scores of the two exams by intimating JEE Main before June 25.

Those candidates who are unable to secure a seat in IITs shouldn't be disappointed as several renowned institutes in country grants admission on the basis of JEE Main and Advanced scores. Institutes like Delhi College of Engineering, NSIT Delhi, PEC Chandigarh, IIIT Hyderabad, Dherubhai Ambani Institute of Technology in Ahmedabad, Thapar Engineering College in Patiala, NIRMA in Ahmedabad and LMNIT in Jaipur grants admission on the basis of JEE Main score.

On the basis of JEE-Advanced scores, colleges like IISER in Pune and Mohali and Rajiv Gandhi Institute Petroleum and Technology in Raebraily and IIS Bangalore and IIST Tiruvanantapuram grant admissions.
